Do I Need A License To Microblade Eyebrows?

Microblading is semi-permanent makeup, applied using a technique similar to tattooing, but the pigment is applied in very small amounts just under the surface of the skin. Microblading is designed to fill out or shape eyebrows semi-permanently. When done right, the outcome is beautiful and completely natural-looking.

Though introduced in Asia, the procedure has gained popularity around the world. The popularity of microblading has grown tremendously over the last ten years, from being an almost unknown procedure to becoming the fastest-growing sector of the beauty industry.

Microblading is a very rewarding profession, with a super high earning potential that comes with the satisfaction of helping people. Microblading artists can charge premium prices for their services, easily earning a six-figure income while working a reduced workweek. An average microblading service can net from $400 to $800, with prices trending even higher in some markets. With this kind of income potential, you can build a very successful business around microblading.

Before starting a new career you should have a clear understanding of what microblading is all about and the commitment you are making. There are trainers out there that will have you believe that you can start this new career and make lots of money in 3-5 days. This is not possible for any career, let alone one where you are learning to do a semi-permanent technique on someone's face. There is a lot of information and practice to be done before ever attempting to do a live person. Anyone making such irresponsible statements should not be considered for such an important choice as choosing a trainer.

In the past, states required a cosmetology license to practice microblading but as of May 2017, most states only require you to take the quick and easy blood-borne pathogens training online to do microblading.

If you own a salon or spa, you need to have the proper business license for your shop before you can do brows for your clients.

While certification is not always required by law, accreditation shows potential clients that you have learned all aspects of microblading, including safety and hygiene.

To get certified in microblading, we recommend you start by searching for the best online classes so that you may learn and practice as much as possible before attempting to do your first model. There is too much information and practice for a 2, 3, or even 5-day class. Although the advantage to a live class is the model you get to practice on, the model comes way too early in the practice for you or the model to benefit from it. The outcome is you, the student, don't really gain much experience and the model suffers from having someone do her brows that haven't had enough practice on latex before doing her brows.

Get Licensed by Your State

Licensing requirements vary by state and may change from time to time.

It is your responsibility to do your homework and comply with all applicable laws governing your area.

These laws exist to protect the consumer from damages due to unskilled microblading practitioners.

You won’t need to be licensed before you become trained, but you can start investigating the requirements now. Because microblading is still relatively new compared to other beauty-related services, the laws governing microblading are still developing and changing.
